“Come on, almost there” Nova urged Rune down the path until it opened up in a clearing. Sighing, she dismounted and ran her fingers over the studded gems in her saddle. “Oh, Artemis...” she whispered and swallowed a lump that formed in her throat. Her grey Percheron nuzzled her soothingly and stood quietly as Nova walked around the clearing and looked up, remembering seeing the shape-shifter and smiled at the thought of her slicing through Nova’s old saddle. “I hate this.” She spat venomously and clenched her fists. “You should have came to me. You should have said something. Too many good people die too early....” Nova choked on the thought of her friends and how every one of them was killed either by someone else or their own hand and it seemed, to Nova at least, that the ones that took their own lives were the hardest to get over and she was sure she wouldn’t be able to get over them in any reasonable amount of time.
“Rune....” she whispered and threw herself at her horse, clinging to her neck to muffle the sound of her sobs. “I miss them” she managed to breathe out through gasps of air and she clung tighter unable to hold her grief in any longer.
As she cried, slowly Rune knelt and laid down knowing Nova wouldn’t be able to stand for much longer. The pair lay in the dirt, Nova absently caressing a jewel, the horse keeping watch since this area was also the place they were attacked the last time.
Time passed and the sun ran across the sky until it was setting and Nova’s sobs turned into hiccups. Finally she looked up, eyes red with exhaustion and puffy from crying.
Standing, Nova dusted herself and pulled a knife from her saddle. Her horse watched her closely as she climbed a tree and thrust the blade into the fork and sighed heavily. “ mea est enim in sempiternum. non potest accipere locum tuum. te desidero. te amo. aeternum.”
Nova climbed down from the tree and sighed again. Rune walked up beside her and shimmered to coal black with flames rising steadily from her hooves and fetlocks. The Percheron reared and placed her two front hooves on the tree and burnt her prints in beside Nova’s knife and said gently “no one can take their place.” She settled back down and cooled off, melting back to her dapple grey.
They stayed in the clearing as the moon rose, Nova laying in the center on her back watching the stars wake up and Rune grazed quietly nearby. Neither of them heard someone approach as they were lost in their own thoughts.
